Moving through shifting grey zones and sharp contrasts, we explore the spectrum of biofuel sustainability, the colour coding of carbon molecules, and how sorting and categorisation determine what is considered green, red, or somewhere in between.
In this space, you will encounter installations that challenge our understanding of what makes a fuel sustainable. Which raw materials are classified as "clean," and how do these perceptions change over time? Who decides what counts as a residue and what becomes a valuable resource?
Exploring Sustainability through Valuation Studies
In SPECTRUM, we examine how biofuels and sustainability are not fixed categories but values that are created, negotiated, and redistributed over time. By analysing colour systems, classification, and sorting, we uncover how materials and the political frameworks surrounding them determine what is seen as green, red, or somewhere in between.
Research in valuation studies shows that value is not intrinsic—it is shaped by social, political, and economic processes. Classification systems, policy decisions, and market logics define what is considered sustainable, ethical, or problematic. In this space, we make visible how biofuels move through different value systems, demonstrating how what was considered sustainable yesterday may become controversial tomorrow.
