The Narrow Opinion Corridor
The Narrow Corridor of Opinion—åsiktskorridoren—is a Swedish term describing the perceived boundaries of acceptable public opinion in political and social debates. It highlights how certain viewpoints dominate discourse while others are marginalised or silenced, shaping what can be publicly expressed without social or professional consequences.
In the debate on biofuels, strong voices and opposing arguments clash. Politicians, industry representatives, researchers, journalists, environmental organisations, and activists compete to define what is sustainable, what is just, and which path Sweden should take in its transition. But not all perspectives are heard equally.
In The Narrow Opinion Corridor, you can experience how opinions are shaped, amplified, or excluded. Which arguments dominate? Which perspectives steer policy? And what happens to the voices that fall outside the corridor? Some voices are marginalised, while others—such as those who do not speak or understand Swedish—are excluded entirely.
This part of the exhibition contains media, films, and comics in Swedish, illustrating how language itself can shape The Narrow Corridor of Opinion, defining who gets to participate in public debate. We acknowledge that this creates a barrier for non-Swedish speakers, much like in the real-world discussions on biofuels and policy.
Perhaps you have already formed your opinion—or is it shifting as you move through the exhibition? Would you like to share your thoughts? Here, you can write a letter to someone you believe should hear it or leave a postcard for future generations.
